How Falconry Works

Falconry is a natural method of bird control that involves using trained birds of prey to deter and keep down nuisance bird populations. Because feral pigeons, gulls and other birds are prey to falcons and hawks, they will avoid their known hunting grounds.

Falconry FAQs

Is Falconry Legal In The UK?

Falconry is legal in the UK, but there are many regulations surrounding the practice. Every falconer needs a license to keep birds of prey and to fly them, and it is illegal to catch wild birds and use them for falconry. As such, only captive-bred, fully licensed birds of prey can be used for falconry. At Acorn Pest Management, we abide by all the relevant laws and have licenses for all our birds of prey.

What Birds Are Used In Falconry?

Many different birds of prey are used in falconry. Some of the most common species used are Harris Hawks, Peregrine Falcons and Red-Tailed Hawks, but many others, including Saker Falcons, Kestrels and even Golden Eagles, can be used.

Will Fake Hawks Keep Pigeons Away?

While fake hawks can stop pigeons and other nuisance birds from nesting or roosting on your premises for a short time, they are a temporary deterrent. Once the birds realise that the hawk is not real, they will return to the site and ignore it. As such, using live birds of prey is a more effective solution. For domestic properties or smaller business sites, we can provide other methods of bird control, such as solar panel bird proofing and bird netting installation, to keep away pest birds.

What Bird Species Can You Deter With Falconry Bird Control?

While falconry is more commonly used to deter feral pigeons or seagulls, it can also be used to keep away almost any pest bird species, including crows, sparrows and others. Alongside falconry, we can also employ other methods of bird control, such as physical bird proofing with bird netting or bird spike installation.
