The Dangers Posed By Pest Moths

There are over 2500 species of moths found in the UK, and most of them are perfectly harmless members of the eco-system.

Unfortunately, some, such as the common clothes moth and the case-bearing clothes moth, can be incredibly destructive. Sometimes known as carpet moths, these pests can destroy natural fibres such as wool, silk, velvet and leather. Another moth species, the Indian meal moth, or pantry moth, can contaminate food and damage packaging.

How To Tell If You Have A Moth Infestation

Adult moths are larger than most insect pests, such as fleas, bed bugs and ants. Still, it can be hard to tell if you have a moth infestation, or just a few adult moths flying around. Here are some clear signs you have moths:

    • Holes In Clothes Or Bare Patches On Carpets: Carpet or clothes moths eat natural fibres, so uneven holes in clothes or bare patches in carpets are a clear sign of moth activity.
    • Moth Larvae In Dried Foods: Pantry moths eat stored food products, so look out for larvae in food storage areas or holes in packaging.
    • Silk Tunnels, Larvae Or Eggs: Look out for silk tunnels, larvae that look like white maggots and small white specks, which could be moth eggs.
    • Musty Smell: Large moth infestations will cause a musty, stale smell to permeate throughout your space.

When it comes to moth control, DIY methods are often next to useless. Many at-home moth treatments are ineffective against moths themselves, but can be toxic to children or pets. They aren’t strong enough to penetrate deep into fabrics, and if used by inexperienced individuals, they aren’t effective control for even a small infestation.

Additionally, moths are incredibly hard to get rid of. That’s because, while adult moths might be relatively large, but their larvae, which are the most destructive, are just 1-2cm in length, and can be easy to miss. If you don’t treat all infested areas, including carpets, wardrobes and drawers, you may think your problem is over, only for moths to move back into other areas in the future.
